Artist Statement
My work is founded in process: the use of line to define form. The compositions are never pre-planned, making each work an event, and non-repeatable.
I seek to navigate and eliminate the negative space within my drawings, and find I am often negotiating with what is described in Japanese as “ma,” or the spaces between. I do not use line to mark form, but rather use line as a sculpting tool for the negative space.
My approach to drawing is a product of meditation, but not meditations in and of themselves. I use different pens and different paper to explore the production of line.
Viewers often express perceiving different subjects, such as coral, capillaries, or topographical maps. I do not have subject matter, as I do not preconceive my compositions. It is my perception that viewers create narratives for my work based on their prior experience with similar literal forms.
